It is our great pleasure and honor to award the 2017 Goedeker's Annual Scholarship to Akeylah Shinaba.
Akeylah is an accomplished young woman who will be pursuing dual bachelor degrees in the field of Biomedical Engineering.
Akeylah's description of herself: "I have been a student within the International Baccalaureate program for four years. I graduated from my high school with a weighted GPA of 4.3 leaving me within the top 10% of my graduating class. Because of my GPA and test scores, I received an Advanced Honors Diploma instead of the standard diploma.
"I was admitted to Spelman in December after applying during their early notification cycle. Throughout the past couple of years, I have participated in a few activities including the National Honor Society, Track and Field, Cross Country, and Krav Maga (a form of martial arts). I have been active in community service projects over the years, dating back to my eighth-grade year.
"In the summer between my freshman and sophomore year of high school, I volunteered at the Sunrise Hospital working at the front desk, rehabilitation unit, and pediatric ER. I spent a total of 153 hours volunteering at the hospital that summer."
She goes on: "I have always been slow to judge people because I understand that everyone has their own demons so you can never know what someone is going through or why they are the way they are. Instead, I focus more on trying to understand people and doing what I can to help them. This is part of the reason why the biomedical engineering field interests me. It presents the opportunity to help those in need in a variety of areas."
Everyone at Goedeker's wishes Akeylah the best. We know she has an incredibly bright future ahead of her.
