This unit was designed to have a grill on the left side. In their engineering wisdom GE felt that they needed to activate the downdraft automatically when you use this side of the cooktop. The problem is that when you purchase and install the regular burners on the left side, turn them on (which in turn turns on the downdraft) the airflow is so great from the downdraft that anything on a burner an
