From the first Labor Day, observed in New York in 1882, to present times, America has paid tribute to the productivity and leadership of its workforce. It has been recognized by Congress as a legal holiday since 1894, and it is celebrated every year on the first Monday in September. This year, that would be September 1.
For some, this day means hosting cookouts or attending an annual picnic. Others tune in to hear speeches made by the President and various government officials, or watch parades in the cities across the nation that still have them. To many, it is simply another day off from work on which they can relax and spend time with their family.
