Family History
The Beginning
From humble roots in St. Louis, Missouri, Ben Goedeker started Goedeker Radio and Television Repair in his home in June of 1951,
Goedeker's expanded into sales, first with electronics then appliances. His first location was a 1,200 sq. ft.. showroom located in south St. Louis. This location proved sufficient until 1970 when Goedeker's expanded into a 3500 sq. ft. building also located in South St. Louis.
Ben Goedeker believed that customer service was more than just being polite. It was also carrying a large selection of quality, name brand appliances and electronics at the lowest possible price. Ben also realized that to be successful he must have a knowledgeable sales staff to help educate his customers, helping them to make the best purchase possible.
The Transition
When Ben passed away, Steve Goedeker, Ben's eldest son, took over
the business. Building on the core principles and values established by his father, Goedeker's quickly became a household name in St. Louis and in 1989, Steve expanded the business to a 22,000 sq. ft. location. In 1990, Steve's siblings, Mike and Janet, joined him in the business. Mike was brought in to manage the sales department and Janet to run the accounting department. In St. Louis, Goedeker's became known as THE place to go for new appliances and TVs. With Goedeker's vast selection, knowledgeable sales staff, unbeatable low prices and excellent customer service, it grew to become the largest privately owned appliance and electronics dealer in Missouri.
Goedeker's was growing so fast it needed a third location. In 1998, Steve opened a new headquarters. Located in the St. Louis suburb of Ballwin, Goedeker's opened its 50,000 sq. ft. megastore and added furniture and mattresses.
The New Beginning
In 2008, Steve decided to add the same great level of customer service, vast selection of products and excellent pricing to the online market. Number1Direct was created and offered appliances, furniture, mattresses, plumbing, and housewares. Number1Direct was a success and yielded thousands of satisfied customers all around the country.
Built on the same principles and values brought into the business by Ben Goedeker over 60 years ago, in 2012, we decided to focus more of our attention to our online customers as they had grown to become the majority of our business. Transitioning Number1Direct into Goedekers.com, we converted our 40,000 square foot store into a 5,000 square foot showroom, using the remaining 35,000 square feet for warehouse space and online operations.
We strive to offer our online customers the best selection with the guaranteed lowest price available while still providing them with that same great customer service local customers have come to expect.
